Understanding Why Beagles Growl and How to Make Them Stop

Addressing the issue of your puppy growling is vital for a happy and healthy bond with your puppy. Even though Beagles are typically friendly and very social, they also develop growling behaviors under certain situations. This doesn’t have to be a big deal if you know what to do to address the problem, but you will have to figure out what is causing the growling.

Why Beagles Growl

Just like with any other behavior problems, growling is easier to address when your Beagle dog is young. If your dog has begun to growl at you during certain times you have not established that you’re the leader yet. If your dog sees him self as your equal he will growl and demonstrate dominance.

Many times a failure to establish your position as the leader will lead to growling problems even if they aren’t directed at you. Beagles growl at visitors because they have a need to guard what they believe is there territory. If you’re the leader they will wait to see how you react before reacting. If you are friendly they will follow suit. You should also consider that your puppy may be sick or hurt. When a puppy is feeling pain they will often react for fear that you are going to do something to hurt them further.

When your Beagle growls in those situations you should not react poorly or punish them. Take them to get their injury fixed and avoid anything that may make their injury worse.

Correcting Growling

If your Beagle is growling for any reason other than being sick or hurt you need to do something to fix the problem. Often times reasserting yourself as the alpha will eliminate any growling problems that are occurring. It won’t be easy and it will take some time, but you will be correcting behavioral problems that need correcting.

Socialize Your Beagle Early

Beagles often growl when they feel threatened. If a Beagle has not spent much time around other dogs and people they will naturally feel threatened when they come in to contact with dogs or people they don’t know. That is why it is so important to get your dog around other animals and people. Eventually your puppy will become comfortable around everyone and you will have far fewer problems to handle when people and dogs come to visit, or when you go to visit them.
