One of the main mistakes we make when travelling to overseas locations such as Greece is that we shy away from foods which we deem as ‘wrong’. As holiday destinations such as Greece are open to catering to our everyday palettes, it is simply too easy to succumb to the array of burger bars and café’s which serve the foods we are used to. However, when it comes to visiting Greece, it is important to embrace as much Greek culture as you possible can, which starts with Greek food.


Throughout the world, Greek cuisine is acknowledged for possessing variety, flavorsome combinations and fantastic nutrition, making it one of the healthiest cuisines across the globe. Food is a big love to the Greeks and is frequently used as a part of family occasions and celebrations showing just how important their food is within their culture and family history. Although time has passed, the fundamentals of Greek food have remained, with the main ingredient in most Greek recipes reaming as Greek olive oil.

Some of the most renowned Greek dishes are Moussaka which consists of stuffed tomatoes, eggplant and Giouvarlakia or meatballs, and Dolmades which is stuffed cabbage leaves. Grilled meats include Britzoles, or pork chops, veal or Britzoles Mosharises; and skewer meat specialties such as Souvlaki which is similar to meat kebabs. Greek fish dishes are known for being some of the best as the country is surrounded by the sea where fishing is a very popular hobby and trade. However, fish dishes are commonly shunned by tourists as the different types of spelling can confuse eaters as to just what type of Mediterranean fish they will be served with. Some of the typical fish you can expect to find at Greek restaurants and taverns include Tsipoura or sea bream, Kolioi or mackerel and Marida or Maridaki which is known as the Greek equivalent to the Altanic Whitebait fish. Other common Greek fish dishes include Kalamaris or squid (Calamari), Htapodi or octopus which is commonly boiled or grilled with vinegar, Gavros which is a type of anchovy; and Galeos which is a smooth hound fillet commonly served with a garlic salad and beetroot. Fish lovers may also like traditional Greek fish soup such as Kakavia which contains some of the most delicious fish with a mixture of vegetables such as onions, carrots, potatoes and celery with the all important Greek ingredient, olive oil. Greek desserts are more commonly known such as traditional Greek yoghurt with honey and Baklava.
