Licking Dogs Can Be Annoying - Here is What Could Cause It

You hear your dog licking again and tell him to stop licking. However, in under a minute he is back to licking himself or your floor. A dog’s constant licking can be annoying and even bothersome at times. One thing that you will want to consider though before yelling at your dog and his licking is why is he licking.

One of the reasons that your dog could be licking is out of boredom. I know that my Lab will lick if he is bored and not sleeping. Now this can be a very easy problem to solve by giving your dog some more toys or bones to play with or chew on. This simple solution can take care of the boredom that your dog might be experiencing and give you something to play with him with.

Another reason that you will have to take into consideration is dander. Now granted if your dog has been given a bath recently then your dog might have developed dander. If that is the case then you might want to consider giving your dog another bath using a conditioner and maybe a hypoallergenic shampoo. This should help your dog get rid of the extra dander that is making him lick.

If your dog continues with his non-stop licking he might have dry skin. The dry skin would be very similar to our own skin when it dries out gets really itchy. So your dog might be trying to moisten the skin with licking. I know that for my dogs to help out with the dry skin around the elbows I apply some lotion to them and rub it in really well. The lotion will help moisten the skin for him and also will help prevent cracking.

However, if you have ruled out all of these reasons above then you will want to ask your veterinarian about possible health issues. Remember dogs can get skin disorders as well that could lead to licking. You will want to consider talking to your veterinarian if you suspect any type of skin issue because remember your dogs skin is just as vital as yours. Not only that if it is a skin problem you will want to make sure that it is not a problem that could spread to you as well.

Dealing with a dogs licking can be easy. You just need to figure out why your dog is licking all the time. After you have figured out why your dog is licking then you will be able to determine what action to take. If you have any questions about the licking though you will want to consult with your veterinarian first.
