How Not to Gain Weight When You Are Incapacitated

If you are incapacitated in some manner such as with a broken leg, recovering from some sort of surgery that has you housebound, etc. you are in a position to gain a significant number of pounds if you continue to eat as you did when you were more active. When you are incapacitated you need to cut back on calories so that your daily intake does not exceed your daily usage of calories.

Many people who get injured and have to go through a long period of recuperation and physical therapy tend to put on weight because they eat the same diet is they would normally when they were much more active. The problem with this is that instead of requiring 2300 calories per day to maintain a certain weight a person may only need 1900 calories. If you’re used to eating 2300 calories per day, cutting back 400 calories will not be easy.

The best thing you can do if you find yourself in this particular situation is to do some research and find out what your basal metabolism requires based on your height, weight and sex. The basal metabolism rate will determine the amount of calories that you need to simply maintain your existing weight if you are in a state where you are completely inactive. It will give you a much better understanding of what you are capable of eating daily so that you do not gain excessive weight.

It is difficult enough to go through a period of recuperation for a lengthy period of time. You don’t want to put on an extra 10 or 15 pounds over that time period that you then have to work for six months to lose once you get back on your feet. If you can maintain your normal weight through the process of incapacitation it will help you in any type of physical therapy that you need to go through and also help keep your spirits high that you are not getting fat as a result of your injury.
