Dog Training Through The Mirror Method

Mirror Method dog training is a little known method of dog training that was developed in Hungary.  The group behind this method is a dog club, Népszigeti Kutyaiskola. The trainers and their dogs are promoting the club’s training technique, but which is actually more like a philosophy.

This method of training  consists of relationship, training, and lifestyle. It relies on the trust between the dog and its owners.  This method takes a holistic approach, reaching beyond traditional training. This method of trainings name comes from the concept that dogs will reflect their owners behavior like mirrors.

There are three parts to the mirror method. These include first, building up the relationship between the dog and its owner in everyday life. Secondly, the owner utilizing a small “clicker” and using only positive reinforcement with no force whatsoever. Finally, taking into account the dog’s hereditary instincts and ensuring it has the opportunity to practice them (for instance allowing a herding dog to herd) and giving the dog opportunities to be useful.

Clicker training originated with Marian Bailey and Keller Breland, graduate psychology students of B.F. Skinner, a renowned behavioral scientist. Clicker dog training is a positive, reward based training method which relies on co-operation, consistency, repetition and positive reinforcement.  A clicker is a small mechanical noisemaker.

According to the founders of clicker training, once the behavior is sufficiently reliable on use of the clicker, a cue or verbal command such as “sit,” or “down” is added to the click, and as the response transfers to the new cue, the clicker is no longer needed.

Important aspects of the mirror method include positive reinforcement with clicker training; including the dog in all aspects of the owner’s life, not just daily walks; socialization of dogs with other dogs; and, respecting a dog’s natural instincts to hunt, defend, guard or retrieve by incorporating those instincts in play and training

Using the mirror method of dog training will result in a dog that is socialized, respectful and able to make use of his innate abilities.
