Dog Supplements For Hip and Joints - Fact Or Fiction?

Good nutrition is always an ideal preventive measure to achieve maximum mobility and flexibility for your pet; however when your pet experiences health challenges, a natural solution can be explored with nutritional support through supplementation. It is always recommended to consult your veterinarian regarding appropriate supplement use.

The following 3 “fact or fiction” statements might help guide you in your decision:

1. All Dog Supplements are equal. False:

  • There are many dog supplements available and they are not all equal. It’s essential that the supplement you choose has been safety tested for pesticides, herbicides, toxins, contaminates and heavy metals.

  • A good supplement should contain all natural ingredients but should not contain any artificial colors, flavor and certainly no stimulants.

  • Supplements which are super pure and have high-strength nutrients will be more apt to support healthy active dogs.

2. Pill or powder form supplements are just as good as supplements which are in liquid form. False:

  • Supplements in the liquid form will not contain the usual binders, fillers and coatings needed in solid tablets and capsules which can cause allergies and sensitivity.

  • Liquid supplements are much more easily absorbed more rapidly.

  • Giving pets supplements usually does require some effort and liquid form is much easier to administer.

3. Only senior dogs need a supplement. False:

  • Veterinarians usually recommend glucosamine for younger animals as it delays the onset of joint damage while dogs engage in the daily activities of running and jumping.

  • Arthritis is more common in older dogs. Its effect on your pet’s life can vary from mild stiffness after sleeping to agonizing pain that keeps them from doing many things they’re used to doing with ease. A hip and joint supplement is highly recommended for pets suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia or other joint problems and seems to help make their arthritic dog more comfortable.

  • Arthritic pets of all ages may benefit from a daily supplement containing ingredients such as Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Type II Collagen and Antioxidants.  These ingredients are effective in maintaining healthy joint movement especially for dogs who experience cartilage decrease due to physical stress from strenuous physical activity and nutrient deficiencies.

Always remember to consult your veterinarian before choosing or giving supplements to your pet. Do not give your dog supplements intended for people or cats. Supplements can be the key to good health for your pet so once the ideal supplement is found, regular use is the key to success for good health.
